Magnification is nowhere near the stated July 28, 2010 R. Hsiao (Alameda, CA) For the supposedly 30X piece, the magnification is more like 3X, which is somewhat useless for me (good as a toy). I'm very disappointed; but since the price is so low it is not worth the time, money, and hassle to return them.
10x & 30x loupes identical July 27, 2010 David F. (Lynn, MA) I ordered the set thinking it would be nice to have several options for magnifiers. I was not expecting top quality optics. I was however expecting to get what is advertised.
The 10x-21mm & 30x-21mm loupes are the same magnification 10x. They are clearly marked, one 10x and one 30x, but they are the same.
How do I know this? Simple hold them side by side over a piece of graph paper and the image is the exact same in both. At the very least one shouldn't be able to focus at the same distance as the other.
I don't know if this is a fluke or not but I'm disappointed. Shipping to return these would be more than they cost.
You get what you pay for July 24, 2010 Benbrilling (Santa Cruz, CA USA) Obviously at this price these are very low quality loupes. Knowing this I didn't expect much as long as they actually magnified things. I just bought them to keep around the place for quick and handy use. If you want a good quality loupe you should expect to pay at least $30 each.
All 4 lenses have approximately 10x magnification. The one with the markings on the case of "FIVE ELEMENTS; 20x" is the best joke. It is ONE element, just like the others, and it is 10x magnification, like the others.
I would have given the set 3 stars since they do a half-decent job of magnifying (at least in the center of the field) and the cases are sturdy (and they come in handy hinged-lid plastic boxes I can use for other things), but since it bothers me that they are misrepresented, I cut it down to 2 stars.
I'm adding a couple of photos to the page for comparison, showing my $30 10x loupe vs. their "30x" loupe.
30x is actually 10x. They should mark it as such. July 14, 2010 Chartsurgeon 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Not nearly as good as the 10x loupe I bought at a hobby shop years ago. Didn't expect much for $5.93, but did expect to get what was advertised. If you need a 30x loupe, look elsewhere. This "30x" loupe is actually 10x. The set's optics are very poor. Objects are magnified but the image you see is not as sharp and detailed as you would get with a better quality loupe. Do yourself a favor and check your local hobby shop or other merchant first if you want a loupe that's not junk. Product returned for refund.
handy little things! July 14, 2010 Alicia T (Bay Area, CA) You really can't beat the price for these with a stick. It's also nice that they happen to be well made little loupes. I use mine for identification of insects and plant diseases, not stones, but I'm sure they'd be just fine for that too.
