Product Description Can you keep a poker face? Can you remember the numbers on the other players' cards? Sharpen your memory and your timing with this clever game of strategy, skill, and awareness. You'll exchange a card on each turn, and try for the lowest score by hoarding all the Cats and discarding all the Rats. Peek, Swap, and Draw Two cards add a twist to the game and will keep you on your toes. This card game is the cat's meow! Game contains 54 Cat and Rat cards, and rules of play for older and younger players. For 2 - 6 players, ages 6 and up. Game time is approximately 20 minutes.Winner of the Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum award.
It's never too early to develop a good poker face. With Rat-a-Tat Cat, a poker face is just one of the skills players need to perfect. As in poker, luck, skill, strategy, and intuition each play a part. Players are dealt four cards, which are kept face- down, except for a quick peek at two of them. Each player in turn pulls a card from the draw pile to replace one of the four. Memory is important, as the object is to end with the lowest score, and players must keep track of the values on their four cards. "Peek," "Swap," and "Draw Two" Power cards turn up occasionally, allowing players to maneuver and strategize further. Delightfully witty pictures of cats (the good guys--low points) and rats (bad guys--high points) illustrate each of the 54 cards. Young card sharks will develop a sense of timing and greater ease with numbers, and can begin to grasp the concept of probability. Winner of Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Platinum Best Toy Award and the 1996 Mensa Best New Mind Game. For 2 to 6 players. --Emilie Coulter

New Favorite Game August 24, 2010 Daedalus18 (US) We discovered this game at a vacation home that we rented for the week recently - and once we got started, we had a hard time putting it down. We played 6 or 7 rounds at a sitting, my wife my child (5) and I. My 5 year old had no trouble at all picking up on the rules, but she can be bit more game-seasoned than other kids her age - so maybe the age 6 recommendation is appropriate.
My only trouble now has been getting my hands on a copy from a store - surprising how many stores carry Gamewright games and don't have Rat-A-Tat-Cat, maybe they get games in mixed batches and they sell out?
We are picky about games - and love this one.
best travel entertainment for the family August 1, 2010 YF (Argentina) This has been the family favourite for travel and restaurant entertainment for the last 4 years, even now at 10 years old is still entertaining my kids. Big plus:
Keeps adults interested too
Very easy for kids to teach to their friends and to other kids on holiday. Even to new friends who don't speak the same language. We just met a French family in Brazil with a pack of Rat-a-tat-cat!
Easy to pack for travel
Have now added Frog Juice to the suitcase - more complex and also excellent. Now looking for more Gamewright games. Keep up the good work!
All Around FUN card game ! January 10, 2010 L. Antoncich (Minnesota) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We had played this card game at our grandkid's house. (They are 4 and 6.) Afterwards I had to order the game for my house, to have for the other kids. We played it New Year's Eve party with only adults. Had a blast. It is a fun game that does not require reading and the rules are flexible. I recommend this game to anyone that likes a challenge of chance & memory. The goal of the game is to have the fewest points with Cats and not get caught with the high scoring Rats.. The 4 star score for durability is because it is a "card game", they will eventually wear out.
Love it! December 29, 2009 Rebecca Lynn (ma) The salespeople at a great local toy store recommended this game for my 6-year old. I never would have looked at this twice if they hadn't told me about it. I thought the directions seemed a little confusing at first but once we started playing it we loved it! Very simple, different and fun.
Great Game and Develops Math Skills December 9, 2009 J. Wood (Atlanta, GA) My 6 year old twin boys love this game! We've played with 2, 3 and 4 players, but we really enjoy playing as a family. I like the fact that the children must add up their cards at the end of each round developing math skills in a fun way. At the beginning of the game, you decide how many rounds you'll play and the winner is the player with the lowest number of total points. We usually play 5-6 rounds per game. Takes 15 minutes. My kids always want to play again, so keeping each game short works for us and gives more players a chance to win. It was an easy to learn game and does require some simple strategy. It's a game we enjoy playing over and over. I think an appropriate age range would be 5 years +.
