At a Glance

Ages: 8 and up
Requires: Microwave oven; adult supervision
Getting Started
The Cupcake Maker comes with four special cupcake mixes and frosting that are custom designed for use with this toy. The cake flavors include red velvet, chocolate, yellow, and cinnamon sugar; the frostings are chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and cream cheese flavored. These easy-to-use mixes, which contain no wheat ingredients--a definite plus for the gluten-free crowd--and require only water as an added ingredient. (Allergy alert: the mix does contain powdered eggs and powdered milk.)

The toy comes with everything your child needs to mix, bake, and decorate the cupcakes: a tiny mixing bowl, measuring spoon, water dropper, and miniature spatula for mixing the batter and frosting; a microwaveable container for baking the cupcakes; and a cupcake frosting gadget with a shape reminiscent of a KitchenAid standing mixer. And everything your little chef needs to get started is packaged in chic, girl-pleasing, contemporary pastels.

Mix It Up
Simply mix the cake mix with water using the provided measuring spoons and water dropper to reach the desired consistency (we found that a pudding-like consistency gives the best results), pour the batter into the cupcake paper, and put it in the plastic "baking dish," bake it in the microwave for about 30 seconds, and--voila!--out comes a completely baked cupcake. Because the cupcakes get pretty hot, an adult should handle them until they're cool enough to handle.

In the meantime, the frosting can be mixed up in the same manner. Again, it took us a few tries to get the proper consistency: it's especially important for the frosting to be, as suggested, the consistency of firm cookie dough to work properly with the cupcake froster.

Time to Decorate
The cupcake froster comes with a frosting tube with a plunger and decorator-type tip. Scoop the frosting into the tube with the miniature spatula and place it in the machine. (This step can prove almost impossible if the frosting is too runny.) Place the cooled cupcake below and push down the lever. The frosting machine simultaneously spins the cupcake and pushes out the frosting to create a spiral shape. Kids can put the finishing touches on with the included sprinkles or, as the "shortcut" cards suggest, with cut-up fruit or candy (you'll want to stock up on these beforehand). The finished cupcake is smaller than a regular cupcake and a bit larger than your standard mini cupcake.

The Taste Test
The quick-and-easy baking and frosting mixes make for a fun and simple introduction to baking, especially for kids who haven't already started growing their "kitchen legs." Kid-sized cooking utensils makes it fun for kids to use, and are much easier to use than Mom and Dad's larger and heavier utensils.

The cupcakes themselves cook quickly in the microwave, making for a fast turnaround that won't try younger kids' patience; but they also, to be honest, don't quite have the taste as the home-made cup cakes that mom or grandma makes. But admittedly, this opinion is formed by an adult palate. For the kids that cook the cupcakes, they will be flavored with the sweetness of do-it-yourself pride.

Adults will need to make sure, however, that the kids don't start out with aspirations to the Martha Stewart-like decorating job pictured on the box: after multiple tests, we found that the cupcake froster simply does not turn out perfectly dainty frosting spirals. This might prove disappointing, so kids should be prepared to expect more realistic, charmingly handmade results. And your kids will be sure to have a lot more fun and confidence with their own creative decorating jobs.

Add water to cake mix with the provided spoons and water dropper.

Pour the batter in the dish, microwave, and--voila!--a cupcake!

Place the cooled cupcake below and start frosting.

Keep it coming ... you can never have too much frosting!

Cover the cupcake with sprinkles and its ready to eat!

3 out of 5 stars One for Four   March 14, 2010

My wife's 1st attempt was a disaster. My 4yo daughter's 2nd attempt wasn't any better. I decided to step in...cupcake 3 fell on it's face. Ok, I then realized that we were trying to cook the frosting...HAHA! We slowed down, collected ourselves (swallowed our pride) and with several packages of cake-mix remaining we opted for Cinnamon Spice. I cooked it in 10s increments to avoid burning. 3 iterations...voila...a moist cinnamon sugar cupcake! The 1 remaining package of frosting was a perfect match :) Some may think that the moral of the story is to read the instructions and labels... My daughter had a blast and that's what matters most isn't it? I'm on amazon shopping for refills :)

1 out of 5 stars Please! Don't waste your money!!!!   March 3, 2010

Much better in concept than in execution. Cupcakes and frosting are nearly inedible. You cannot microwave a cupcake and have it turn out as edible. Makes only one cupcake at a time. The frosting machine basically splurts out a blob of frosting on the cupcake, not at all like the picture on the box or instructions describe. Complete failure. I don't see the educational value at all. You are better off taking half an hour to bake a box of Duncan Hines cupcakes with your child, which would provide you the opportunity to review measuring and time concepts. And let's face it, you only need three ingredients besides the boxed mix. And if you don't want to make frosting yourself, buy the pre-made stuff, spoon it into a plastic sandwich bag, cut off a corner and let the kids have at it with the decorating. They should be ashamed of themselves. This stinks.

1 out of 5 stars This item was awful   January 11, 2010

My daughter was so disappointed with this. She got it for Christmas and could not wait to try it out. It was awful and disappointing! We kept trying it thinking it would get better, but it didn't. The frosting was always too runny, the cavity where you put the frosting was hard to use and attaching the cylinder to the machine, prior to frosting the cupcake was awkward and frustrating. My sister gave one of these to her daughter and had a similar experience. Don't waste your money on this over priced product! You are better off cooking cupcakes from scratch with your daughter and frosting them...it would be more fun and you would have 24 cupcakes instead of just three and it would probably be a lot faster, too!

1 out of 5 stars My Thoughts   January 11, 2010

Jakks Pacific Girl Gourmet Cupcake Maker TOTAL disappointment. Does anybody TASTE this stuff before they market it? Even the dog wouldn't eat the cupcake! My granddaughter is nicknamed Cupcake & I was looking forward to sharing an evening making, decorating & sharing a cupcake with her. The cupcake was horrible, the icing was even worse. The few sprinkles that were included were the only edible thing in the kit! This company should be embarrassed to market this toy.

1 out of 5 stars Big disapointment   December 31, 2009

My daughter has been asking for this item for months. I was tempted in August to buy it for her birthday but visions of messes going through my head kept me far from it. This Christmas season came around and I was short on ideas for her so I took a chance. Big mistake.

This box came with all you need to make four cupcakes.

At first it seemed easy. Okay, mix the mix, put it into a lined cup, microwave for 30 second, cool, mix frosting, put into tube, put tube into machine and pull lever which sends the cupcake spinning and voila! a perfectly decorated cup cake in under 5 minutes.

Unless you are one of my kids. The first part, making the cupcake, was easy enough. The problems started when we started mixing the frosting mix. I followed the directions and only put 1/2 tsp in the cup, however the frosting still ended up being runny. The tube that you put the frosting in has a completely open end at the other end and so as you scoop frosting into the top, it slides out the bottom! I even tried thickening the frosting with powdered sugar, but still had the same problem. Once the tube is packed with frosting, you have to try to insert it into it's position on the machine, as frosting slides out onto the cupcake and the machine. Once fitted you pull the lever and it's supposed to make your cupcake twirl for an even coating of frosting... or if you are my kid you send it sailing off the machine and into your brother's shirt. Because I had to thicken the frosting, it all came out in one clump in only one half of a twirl. So we had to take the rest of the cupcakes out and spread the frosting with a knife anyway. The sprinkles were much easier to apply, as you put them into a little shaker with holes for slow distribution.

Frosting a cupcake is a lose/lose situation with this big item. It was a fun idea, but something needs to be improved on it to make it work right. I give this item as is a big Thumbs Down!
